Automation Engineer

Are you versatile, and do you relish facing new challenges?

Manuel, Automation Engineer

“The huge variety of systems means every one is a new challenge, and you’ll never get bored. But the most important thing is the team spirit we have, which isn’t easy to replicate anywhere else.”

What do you need to bring to the table for this job?
Which talents do you need?

Becoming an Automation Engineer is the right choice for anyone who wants to pursue their love of technology without being stuck in a laboratory or workshop every day.  It’s definitely not for everyone, but if you decide to follow this path, it can be fulfilling in a way that very few other professions are.

What qualities do you need to do this job?

A good Automation Engineer will have in-depth technical expertise.

Although the fields of application are as diverse as the people who pursue this career, we all have one thing in common: our attitude to our work.
‘Failing’ or ‘giving up’ aren’t in a PMS Automation Engineer’s vocabulary, even if it’s been a long and difficult working day. “We don’t stop when we’re tired – we only stop when we’re finished.”

What do you most enjoy about your job?

All Automation Engineers are individualists who really enjoy their freedom, but we’re still a close-knit group and everyone’s ready to lend a sympathetic ear whenever it’s needed.
Whether it’s holding a kick-off meeting with a customer, coordinating plans with project managers and designers, or being the last person on site to press the Start button on the new system, our job is rarely dull.

Once we’ve successfully seen a project through to completion, we have a coffee – or occasionally a beer – with our colleagues and discuss the experience we’ve gained.

What isn’t part of the job?

Unlike Project Managers, whose jobs are also full of variety, Automation Engineers don’t have to deal with loads of paperwork ;-)

Does it involve contact with customers, and if so, where and how?

Automation engineers can be found wherever they’re needed – it’s a job that can involve being called out to some of the more far-flung locations in this world. Whether it’s commissioning power stations and manufacturing facilities on site with customers or quick remote troubleshooting, you have to be fully committed and you’ll almost always need to speak to customers.

What makes this job different from other jobs at PMS?

As an Automation Engineer you’re a creative “lone warrior” always looking for a new challenge. It’s definitely not for everyone, but if you decide to follow this path, it can be fulfilling in a way that very few other professions are.

What’s special about working at PMS?

What makes being an Automation Engineer at PMS special is mainly our customers and the variety of systems we work with. That means every system is a new challenge, and you definitely won’t get bored. But the most important thing is the team spirit we have, which isn’t easy to replicate anywhere else.
